Hi! This is something I wrote a few days ago and I decided to post it here, since it is about Jack White and Brendan Benson. It's slash; please don't hate me.
Every Breath You Take
Jack held his best friend's hand, wondering if he felt any pain. Brendan's eyes were closed and his head rocked back and forth as the ambulance took a reckless turn, making him look like a rag doll.
"Brendan?" Jack began, his mouth unnatrually dry.
He wasn't sure where to start, and let his mind rewind to earlier in the day...
The two of them sat in the tour bus, relaxing before soundcheck. Brendan was reading his favorite book, 'Catcher In The Rye', and didn't see Jack watching him intently, taking in the details of his appearence, from his golden curls to his downcast hazel eyes and perfect lips. He was beautiful.
Jack hated himself for thinking that, but he couldn't help it. And he knew Brendan wasn't interested in men, because he had a girlfriend, Brittany.
"Penny for your thoughts," Brendan said, closing the book.
"You're not actually going to give me money," Jack replied.
Brendan took a penny out of his pocket and tossed it to Jack, who caught it easily.
"I was thinking about my life," he lied.
"What life?" Brendan asked, smirking.
"Shut up," Jack muttered. "So, how's Brittany?" he asked, just to be polite.
"Oh...um...I don't know, actually. We broke up last night. After the show." Brendan replied quietly.
"Seriously?" Jack exclaimed, surprised.
Brendan nodded. His face was in the shadows, so Jack couldn't really see his expression, but he was could tell by his friends tone that he was upset.
"I'm really sorry, man. What happened?" he asked.
"Well...I ended it because I'm in love with someone else." Brendan said bluntly.
"Who?" Jack blurted, unable to contain his curiousity.
Brendan closed his eyes, as if what he was about to say took a lot of energy.
"It's you, Jack. I'm in love with you." He whispered.
Jack was stunned. He didn't know what to say, and he didn't know if he could say anything, anyhow. His mind was completely blank and words no longer seemed to even make sense.
"I understand if you don't feel the same w-" Brendan began, but was interrupted by Jack kissing him softly.
"-ay." Brendan finished, looking amazed.
Before Jack knew what was happening, they were kissing again, more passionately this time, and he found his fingers tangled in Brendan's hair as their excitement grew.
"Wait," Jack said, suddenly becoming aware of what they were doing.
"I'm sorry," Brendan apologized.
"No, don't be. I'm just worried that someone will see and I don't know what people are going to think. How will Patrick and LJ take this?" Jack asked.
"I don't know." Brendan replied, sounding very unsure.
"Well...we should maybe just keep this a secret until we're really ready to tell them." Jack said.
"Okay. Oh, we should go. Soundcheck is in a few minutes," Brendan said, checking his watch.
"I'll be right there," Jack told him.
Brendan smiled at him and then went out the door, whistling a song Jack didn't know.
A moment later, Jack got out of the bus and looked around for Brendan. He was crossing the street, looking one way up the street. Clearly, he didn't see the car headed straight for him. Jack screamed his name, and for a split second Brendan's eyes met Jack's before the sound of screeching brakes and skidding tires filled his ears and he saw the car slam into Brendan.
His frail body didn't stand a chance against the still moving vehicle. He was flung forward and then hit the pavement with a sickening thud. Jack heard himself yelling Brendan's name over and over, and remembered dialing 911, but the rest was a blur. All he knew was that he was now in an ambulance, listening to the sirens wail like despairing onlookers and holding onto his friend's hand like it was the only thing keeping him alive.
"Oh god, Brendan...I don't know if you can hear me, but I want you to know that I love you more than anyone or anything in the world," Jack said, sobbing.
Brendan's hazel eyes fluttered open and Jack's heart leapt.
"Jack...I love you, too...so much. I'll miss you..." he whispered.
His breathing became even shallower, and his fingers loosened their grip on Jack's hand.
"No! No, Brendan, don't leave me! Please don't!" Jack said, tears blurring his vision.
He watched helplessly as Brendan's eyes closed and he took his very last breath.
